Why I'm No Longer In Business
It’s not what you think!
First let me say, I am not giving up on being a business coach. Adelle King, Business Coaching is not going away. I love talking with my amazing clients about all the ways they can grow their business, making more money, enjoying more down-time, and having way more fun!
What I mean by, “I’m no longer in business.” ties into my secret, super nerdy love of words and etymology. Etymonline.com is probably one of my most visited websites outside of the platforms I use to run my daily operations.
So, here it goes. It’s about to get real nerdy in here! But, bear with me. I think you’ll love this and it will really surprise you!
Words have power, words have meaning and words have energy. But a lot of words have changed in meaning and how we use them over the years, yet they still carry the energy of the original meaning. Now I know this isn’t true for everyone, but I have found it’s very true for me, and many others who I have facilitated in moving past their blocks and limitations over the years. When we use words, sometimes we are impacted by the energy they carry that we’re not even aware of cognitively. Enter my love of etymology – or the “facts of the origin and development of a word”. (1)
Recently, I looked up the word “business”. (2) Not surprisingly, it’s related to busy. But, it turns out it’s also related to anxiety! Well I don’t know about you, but I do not want or need any more anxiety in my life. Anxiety is not what I am looking to create in my life.
Then, I looked up company. What I found were words like: large group, society, friendship, intimacy, together, to feed. (3) Turn out company literally means to come together (com) to share bread (pan) together. The “pa” part also means “to protect, feed.” (4) And I am all about sharing food with people I love. And I would love if my company creates protection and nourishment for myself and everyone who I work with or who comes across my content.
So I have officially switched from referring to Adelle King, Business Coaching as my business. It is now my company! Just saying it feels so much lighter and more expansive! It also feels welcoming and inviting! There is so much talk online about growing your business, your email list, you audience. If you were growing your company instead, what would that create?
