Are You A Creative Person?

Crative Person

Are you (secretly) a creative person?

When I was in kindergarten or first grade, I remember this one homework assignment where we were given a worksheet with a big block letter “A” in a box in the top right quarter of the page and large lines with a dashed line through the middle covering the rest of the sheet. Our assignment was to write the letter “A” repeatedly and fill the page. Afterward, we could color in the block letter and decorate the little “A” in the box. I recall negotiating with my mom because I only wanted to do the coloring portion of the assignment.

I recently reintroduced coloring into my life as a daily meditation practice. Another daily practice that I have developed over the years is writing in my journal every night before I go to sleep. This ritual has gone through different phases, some where I am very consistent, others where I hardly opened my journal for months. I had periods where I would write pages and pages, dumping my thoughts onto paper, and others where I would bullet-point lists of accomplishments and things I was grateful for from that day.

At this point, I have made my rituals and routines a sacred commitment to myself that I do my best to make time for each and every day. Last week, I was doing my evening journaling and I had a revelation!

I also remember when I was in elementary school being tested by psychologists and teachers to evaluate why I was struggling in school. I rarely arrived to school on time, frequently missing the bus, even when I woke up on time. I was a dreamer, I didn’t read as easily as others my age. One year they put me in an accelerated program and the next in the resource program with classmates who had learning disabilities or didn’t have English as their first language.

I didn’t seem to quite fit anywhere. I decided this meant there was something wrong with me. I was a problem a big and complicated problem that no one could solve.

So, back to the journaling revelation… There I was writing, doing my best to focus on the positive and acknowledge my strengths. I was looking at my skills as a writer and commending myself for being creative… and then it hit me! I’m not just creative as a writer. I also grew up dancing. I love to dance! And I sang in choirs. I love music too! And I acted. You guessed it, theater is another love of mine! Drawing and coloring, lol! Plus, I love to cook and plate my food beautifully. Culinary Arts!!

I realized, there is nothing wrong with me. There never was. I am a creative person! Not only am I creative…

I am creative in so many different ways!

Can you relate to this?

Are there ways you expressed yourself creatively as a child that you have grown away from or let fade away?

Hear me talk about all this and more in the vlog video on this topic! 👇

What if you made time for those activities again?

What if you could even find ways to incorporate this into your business?

For me, I introduced coloring as a meditation to help me tap into my creative thinking, inspiration and problem-solving mindset from a different perspective when I was feeling stuck and blocked in my business. I do this with walking in nature as well.

I believe that whatever you love to do, there is a way to monetize it and be successful. Maybe your creative expression is something that you enjoy doing just for you, just for fun… Or maybe it’s something that you have even been pulled to turn into a business!
